The photos were taken by Zsolt Frei on the 5th May 1991 in Palomar Observatory with the 60 inch telescope using filters g (green), r (red), and i (infrared). The foreground stars were subtracted from the pictures.
I used FITS Liberator to extract an 8 bit grayscale TIFF image from the raw data for the three filters. I used logarithmic function to even out the intensities before extraction, then used Photoshop to insert the grayscaled images as channels in a 24 bit color image, converting irg to RGB (this is still a false color image, even though the light of the galaxy is redshifted, but only by 0.1855%).
These images were part of a laboratory exercise to determine the apparent magnitude of the galaxy using a set of standard stars.
